"We asked our residents what items they would want to really enhance their stay at the St. George and with EHS. So many students indicated that they would like having access to a fully functioning health club to help alleviate stress and improve their time with us. We researched facilities in the area that would cater to our residents' needs, and found that Eastern Athletic Club was an ideal match. Its proximity to the St. George, hours, classes, and other amenities were exactly what our students were asking for," said Educational Housing Services' Vice President for Student Life, Christy Gaiti.
Last semester, EHS and Eastern Athletic Club offered a student discount of $80 per month, but many St. George residents budget their money because they are responsible for paying for food, basic necessities, and much of their transportation. According to most of the Pace students, who previously lived in Maria's Towers, where gym memberships were not a concern, $80 is too much.
Since the St. George is its only residence without a full gym, EHS decided that the gym membership would be another benefit of living at the Brooklyn residence hall.
"I'm surprised there's not a catch," sophomore Kristin Edwards said. Three weight rooms, a bicycle track, and a swimming pool as well as some moderately priced classes are just a sample of what is included in the offer. There is also a full spa for a fee, which offers massages, facials or treat themselves to a day of pampering with the "Day of Wellness" package. Since Pace sports are located on the Pleasantville campus, St. George residents in New York City can take advantage of the sports' teams such as fencing, volleyball, basketball and softball.
So far a large amount of St. George residents have signed up for the gym. Manager Isle Korey said there should be no problem accommodating the large amount because there is more than enough space. Sophomore Becky Mabalia agrees, "I can't believe how big it is inside considering where it is located."
Korey also wants to let the students know that they are expected to abide by the rules and regulations of the club and that the club "is delighted to have [them] and looks forward to having an association with them."
St. George residents, who would have liked to take advantage of this offer, should have signed up before Feb. 1.
